Young Authors Conference - For 3rd-5th Grade Authors

We are excited to offer all third, fourth, and fifth grade students a chance to participate in a terrific writing contest. We hope that it will provide some new opportunities for many of our students.

The Young Authors Conference (YAC) is a writing competition, which includes four separate categories:

Poetry: write a poem about anything as long as it is at least 8 lines long

Creative Writing: choose one of the pictures and write a story. Your story HAS to be about the picture in some way, don’t just choose a random topic!

Personal Narratives: a story about YOUR life!

Argumentative Writing: choose a prompt and write an essay to support your side of the argument (only grade 5)

All students are encouraged to enter. The contest entries will not be completed in class. Students should share, via Google Documents, their completed entry to ckramer@barabooschools.net. It should be typed in 12 point Arial font with their name, grade level, teacher’s name, and category on it. Click here to see a sample writing.

Unfortunately, there will not be time available at school to type the entries. However, if students need a device to type, please have them ask their teacher to figure out a time. Students are required to write and edit their own work.

Completed writing is due by Friday, February 21st. The writing will be judged by a group of Baraboo teachers. The writers of the selected entries will participate in a writing conference on April 4, 2025, at the Westfield High School/Middle School. They will learn how to enhance their writing and participate in different writing activities. More information about this day will be provided at a later date. The selected entries will also be published in the YAC anthology, a book that contains writing from all the selected individuals. Each student who is selected will also receive a copy of the anthology.
